In the heart of the Hansaviertel stands a square building with large, bright windows flanking the entrance. Through these windows you can easily see the people inside, whether sitting or standing, creating a serene and comfortable atmosphere – this is my first impression of the Hansa Library.
At the centre of the building is a square open garden, an oasis that offers readers a unique reading environment. The cleverly designed operable windows can be fully opened on sunny days, allowing the indoor space to flow seamlessly into the outdoor garden. This design creates a fluid indoor-outdoor reading experience, making the overall space feel more open and dynamic. Visitors are not only provided with a distinct reading experience, but also feel a stronger connection to the natural environment. Residents have commented that the sense of space in the Hansa Library has remained unchanged from the past to the present. Such a special place naturally attracts not only the residents of the Hansaviertel, but also those from Moabit, just across the bridge, who frequently visit.
Designed by the famous Berlin architect Werner Düttmann, the Hansa Library was one of the buildings included in the 1957 Interbau architecture exhibition in West Berlin. Prior to the refurbishment, the library was threatened with closure due to the age of the building and lack of funding. Fortunately, with strong advocacy and support from many stakeholders, funding was secured through the National Urban Development Plan in 2015. The renovation not only breathed new life into the library, but also brought it up to heritage standards, allowing us to still appreciate its unique spatial charm.
These ongoing events have helped the Hansa Library to maintain its high standing in the community and demonstrate its important role in the social fabric. The library is truly a cultural oasis for the Hansa community. It is a place where residents can exchange ideas, share interests and grow together as a centre of cultural diversity and creativity. Whether you are a local resident or a visitor from afar, the Hansa Library welcomes you with open arms.
Feedback from residents: The library provides a comfortable reading space and serves as an important centre for local cultural activities. Under the careful guidance of successive librarians, the Hansa Library hosts a wide range of interesting and ongoing events. These include themed exhibitions, book clubs, monthly children’s puzzles, exciting lectures, workshops, and even summer festivals; all of which attract large crowds. These events have not only enriched the cultural life of the community, but have also improved communication between residents and increased the library’s appeal over time.
Feedback from residents:
“I love the atmosphere there and the courtyard, which feels so secluded. My children loved solving the monthly children’s quizzes and then eagerly checking to see if their names were on the list of winners, then choosing a book or game from the ‘gift cupboard’” – Seffi S.
“The Hansa Library was one of my favourite places back then. I used to go there at least three times a week. I’m glad it’s still there.” – Inka Jantke
